here’s what’s up

January 17th, 2012 by kevin

I am working with two different, disparate groups of musicians on two different arrangements of the song in this demo recording (here’s an mp3 that you can download). One of them will become one side of a seven inch record that I am going to have created as soon as I can tie things up.

paintings

May 3rd, 2011 by kevin

Late last year I finally completed a painting that had been laying around unfinished for months and I went ahead and uploaded it to the art and photos page, almost a year after posting an incomplete version of the same painting…. I loosely plan to do a series of paintings like this one, but I’m working on a different painting altogether right now. Which is to say, it’s sitting in my apartment half completed….

a bicycle and a tongue

July 10th, 2010 by kevin

I just finally looked up the pictures from this year’s tour of the five boroughs. I was on a random bike ride and stumbled upon a sea of 30,000 bikes and decided to joined them–biking 55 unexpected miles in total, including the ride home.

Early on an Irish woman (I love the Irish) told me that the organizers would kick me out unless I had a sticker and so I had better find one. So I found one somewhere early on in the route that must have blown off someone”s helmet and I slapped it on my own.

I stuck my tongue out in all of the photos. It seemed like the right thing to do.

All in all, I think it was the best thing I’ve done in my life. Not sure what that says about me but what can I say(?), it was surreal.

(a map of the bike route can be found here)

cemetAry movement* @ The Station

June 18th, 2010 by kevin
, 3 songs from The Station gig, Carrboro, NC – 06.17.2010 by Cemetery Movement

I played a gig last night under this Cemetery Movement moniker opening up for Birds and Arrows at The Station, in Carrboro, North Carolina–my former home. I have been a supporting cast member (and continue to be) in others’ projects many times over in these in between years, and i love that role. This one, however frightening it may be, has me at the steering wheel.

Josh Starmer of B&A was gracious enough to play cello on four songs with me too (Josh, you are amazing. thank you so much), and three of those songs are for download and listen above. Andrea Connolly, also of B&A, and whose birthday is today, sang the second set of vocals on the Bonnie “Prince” Billy song (you are also amazing and thank you too A).

When we were in college I tried to convince Andrea and the rest of our bandmates that we should live on a cruise ship in Europe for a year as the “boat band” after college, to sort our arrangement and instrumentation ideas in a setting that was bizarre and cartoon. In other words: it’s probably best that I now have my own music project where I can channel all of that madness unfiltered :)

Thank you Birds and Arrows. You three were so important these last couple of weeks. Everyone else: here’s a link to their band’s website (link #1) and you can find their stuff for purchase at 307 Knox Records’ website (link #2).

the songs from my set with josh:
- little miss methuselah (this one’s mine, and it’s the final arrangement & words)
- you want that picture (by bonnie prince, with andrea)
- used to have a girl (by the jordans)

*nobody knows how to spell “cemetery”

i like cello and it makes me forget the words

The photo, which surely you cannot read, says: “This paper is embedded with wildflower seeds. moisten card and plant just under surface of soil in a sunny spot. Water regularly until seeds germinate. Presto.”
